The Aquarium Effect
I went and got new glasses today. The old ones had gotten really scratched up and the left eye just wasn’t very sharp. After two years, I figure it’s time to go get some new ones.
I normally go to Dr. Crook, who has known my family since I was a wee one in Nebraska. He wasn’t there today and I got seen by a doctor who I swear couldn’t be much past drinking age. I kept getting the feeling he was about to ask me if I could score some weed for him. That’s the kind of guy he looks like.
He pumped up the prescription on my left eye some and I can see much better than before. But the new strength gives me that aquarium effect where it seems like the world starts to distort at the edges. If you wear glasses, you know what I mean.
Hopefully I can get used to these new glasses before I bust my behind.

I just got my first pair of glasses this past fall. It’s not a strong prescription but man, I’ll tell you, the first time I tried to wear them … I started feeling sick within a half hour of putting them on. I’m somewhat used to them now (I don’t wear them much), they are great for night time driving, but once I take them off I’m blind for about ten minutes.

Here’s something to look forward to: at my age, I have two pairs of bifocals, one for long-range and reading, another for in front of the monitor and reading. The frames on these are different so I can tell them apart. Wearing the monitor pair makes me dizzy when I’m not in front of the screen. I could be a real cheap drunk if I wore them all the time.
It’s kind of a pain, but it beats trifocals, which would be the alternative.
