Suspicious

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

I keep seeing headline after headline that says something along the lines of, “U.S. troops kill (fill in the number) suspected insurgents (or suspected terrorists)”.

It turns my stomach every single time I read something like that. So this is where we have gotten to as a country? We now kill people because we think they might be against us? And we accept that? How do we know we aren’t wrong? What if they weren’t insurgents/ terrorists? How do we know we weren’t just being paranoid? Because if there was ever a suspicious country, it’s America post-9/11.

America today reminds me of an episode I had as a child. I had committed some sort of childish transgression and was being scolded by my Mom.

“You don’t love me!”, I wailed.

“I love you no matter what.”, she replied. “But right now, I don’t like what you are doing.”

That’s how I feel about my beloved U.S.A. now. Except that it’s transgressions aren’t childish. They are deadly. And we kill people that might be against us. And the more we do that, the more people might be against us. So the more we are gonna have to kill.

This is how Empires fall. Ask the Romans.

P.S. Am I the only one who has noticed that the definition of insurgent specifically includes a lack of belligerence? Maybe we should think up a new name for them. Something like “people who are pissed because we are occupying their land and killing their relatives in order to stop them from hoarding weapons they didn’t have”.

Nevermind, that doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Delirium Tremens

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

So I had been having a run of bad luck at the poker tables. Every book I’ve read says that it happens to the best of them and that you should expect it to happen to you.

That’s easy to read, but hard to deal with.

I had so many bad beats in which I got my money in with the best hand and very few outs for my opponents and still lost that it got to the point I was expecting to lose. And when you expect to lose it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, I decided to take a break from the tables. I told myself that I wouldn’t play any this weekend and that means I wouldn’t play for about 10 days as I work Mon-Thurs and then we are going camping Fri-Sun in a cabin that has no TV and no phone.

Well, all of that was easy to say. But man is it hard to do. I have accidentally fired up the software once only to realize what I was doing and shut it right back down. It has become such a part of my routine that it is hard to think of other stuff I should be doing instead.

I don’t think Marilyn has minded much as I have gotten quite a bit of laundry and housekeeping done and I’m cooking dinner right now.

But you know what? I’m still thinking about poker and playing hands over in my head. Trying to imprint some of the lessons I have learned in my brain so as to not make the same mistake twice.

Yes, I have issues. I realize that.

I have to admit though, I’m looking forward to November 4th.

Weird Google Juice

Friday, October 27th, 2006

So I am the #1 site for the Google search “I hate Home Depot“.

It is the single most commented post I have ever made (by 20 or more) and I get a new comment every couple of days now. Having the juice gives the thing a life of it’s own, I reckon. Which is good. I like being the first place anyone that dislikes them goes. I like being associated with a disgust of their poor selection and non-existent customer service.

Home Depot’s motto is only half right. You can do it, they just won’t help.

Queasy

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

Is it just me or does everyone get just a little queasy seeing Erik Estrada shill for Hot Springs Village, Arkansas?

I’m not a huge CHiPs fan or anything, nor even an Eric Estrada fan, it just is a stark and gruesome reminder of how fleeting success in that business can be.

Belated Reply

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

I have thought about doing this post for some time and have just never gotten around to it.
There is a comment in an old post of mine that I have to call bs on. This was the post and here is the comment:

Fair enough if the Honda is saving you money but your eco footprint is ulikely to have changed.
The Rover will probably be good for at least 20 years whereas the Civic may only manage half that. During those 10 years it may go through 3 sets of batteries, nobody really knows how long hybrid batteries will last yet.
So for the Rover - Manufacture, 20 years use, scrap/recycling.
The Honda - Manufacture, 10 years use, 2 new battery sets ( and the recycling of the old batteries), scrap/recycling. Repeat the whole thing over.

Good luck anyway

With all due respect that’s a load. And a half. I’ve owned two Rovers and as much as I liked them, 20 years is ridiculous. Not the way they make them these days. I had to have significant internal engine work done on both of them and neither was over 5 years old. I’ve owned an Accord for 5 years and thus far we had to have a distributor o-ring replaced. Which they did for free and during an oil change. I have no reason to believe that this Civic will be any different. I’ve owned 3 Hondas ( the first was an ancient Civic hatchback that my buddy drove more than me) and I would stack their longevity up against any car on the road today. I would be willing to bet a sizable amount of money that those life expectancies are reversed.

Second, the ecological footprint is a valid statement. Those batteries get recycled, the car will get recycled (and since it is much smaller than the Rover it will require less energy to do so and have much smaller amount of scrap), and the entire time it is in use it will use less gas and give off a tiny fraction of the emissions the Rover will. Both are significant reductions in my footprint. So I stand by my statements.

P.S. I still love that Civic.

Oh No!

This story has given me quite a tickle. Let me quote the gist of it:

Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in
Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy — almost impenetrable forests of 10-feet-high marijuana plants.

Now, I live in a city with an Army base (Fort Gordon), so I’ve met some G.I.s in my time. I have no doubt in my mind that they know how to get through a forest of marijuana. Oh, wait, the story continues:

“We tried burning them with white phosphorous — it didn’t work. We tried burning them with diesel — it didn’t work. The plants are so full of water right now … that we simply couldn’t burn them,” he said.

You can almost feel the disappointment.

If you never read the blog entitled Latigo Flint, Quickdraw, you never read anything worth glancing at.

In fact, if you can read this post without losing a bit of your sanity (and being happy to see it go), then I will send you my personal copy of About Behaviorism by B.F. Skinner. That’s a $10.40 value so you know I’m not messing around.*

John Edwards Rocks

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

I was just perusing through my favorite site full of rabid left-wingers (daily kos) who want crazy leftist nuttiness like equality and peace and all sorts of other commie crap.

John Edwards had put up a diary there just asking people to ask questions and some of his replies were absolutely beautiful. Concise, well-written and obviously thought out. Jesus, when was the last time you heard/saw some evidence that a politician thought about anything other than his/her own backside?

I think this comment was among his best. You can see any one you want by going here. and clicking on the comment title.

A politician that has thought of ways to help end poverty and create a rising tide that could lift all boats? Wow. Even if his ideas don’t work, it would be much more fun sailing with him as a captain than the ship of fools that are intent on running us aground now.

Yes, I know that last sentence has some major grammatical issues, but you get my drift (pun about half intended).
