We are back in town after our wonderful Tybee adventure. Pics and details to follow.

Vacationing

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

So I cheated. I took the last of the 7 off. I could easily have gone in, but I wasn’t so much tired as just tired of being there. So I have an extra day off now. And I will probably waste it. But that’s what vacation days are for.

Starting Sunday, the vacation days definitely will not be wasted. The family is heading to Tybee Island. We’ve been before and had a great time. I’m sure the four of us will have a number of great memories from this trip, too.

4 Out Of 7

I’ve finished 4 out of the 7 shifts in a row. 3 more, baby. I can do it.

I think.

The Movement

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

I went to another concert by The Movement last night. Man, they rock. And rap. And reggae. It was an awesome show. I wish that there had been more people in attendance to enjoy it. I think it would be generous to say that there were 25 people in the crowd. They still rocked the crowd, though. They didn’t let up a bit despite the small crowd.. I was blown away. They played many of the songs off their cd and threw in a few new ones. I was impressed with the new songs I heard. I can’t wait until they come out with their new cd.

I got a chance to talk to Jon (DJ Riggle) for a minute at the bar. I hope I didn’t embarass myself as I was about 2 and 1/4 sheeets to the wind at that point. The good thing about imbibing that much is that if I was being dorky I don’t recall it very well.

The bad part of imbibing that much is that I had to get up and go to work this morning (I worked yesterday as well). I’ve got 5 more 12 hour shifts in a row to go. I’m gonna be one tired puppy by the time next Friday rolls around.

It was worth it, though, to see that show last night. Do yourself a favor, go see them when you get a chance. It’s worth it. I guarantee it.

Junk Science

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

This is what junk science looks like. It’s been more than a dozen years since I took any test design classes or did any tests of statistical significance, but I’m going out on a very short limb here and saying that this is garbage.

They took a sample of 29 women aged 18-20 and have generalized their finding to “women”. That’s an incredibly small, homogenous sample to be making those kind of sweeping generalizations. I might even accept 200 women aged 18-30. Maybe. I’d have to run some numbers to know for sure if it is significant or not.

And I especially love this quote:

While Maestripieri guessed it might have something to do with “a more rounded face, a gentler face,” Roney said the answer might be found in the expressions on the men’s faces.

This is where it really turns to bovine excrement. Let’s take a dubiously constructed set of data and extrapolate out grossly general conclusions.

Now those answers are qualified with “guessed” and “might” but it is still irresponsible for a serious scientist to wildly speculate. I would like to take this moment to remind these “scientists” that if you didn’t specifically measure it with a significant sample of data, there are no conclusions to be reached. Period.

Goofballs.

SCDMV

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

I just got back from the Department of Motor Vehicles. I had to transfer the tag from the Rover to the Civic.

Let me tell you that I feel the same about going to the DMV as I do about enemas. I’ll do it, but only if I absolutely have to. And I’m gonna grit my teeth the whole time.

In the last few years, however, the SCDMV has made some great improvements in their quality of service. They have a queueing system that makes sense and is easy on the customers. They get you in and out and the whole thing is much better than an enema these days. And the women seem nicer now. Maybe because they don’t have to deal with pissed off customers all day anymore.
