I have to add one more thing. Sorry James about all the rambling.

Republicans have always played on the natural paranoid tendencies we have. For many years it was communism. Now it is terrorism and gays.
They need to have an enemy at all times. It makes people worry and waste a lot of money on weapons when we should be spending it on schools, and health etc..

The need for personal guns is a stonger issue with the republicans although I must say a lot of democrats love guns too. It shocks me that an item which sole purpose is to kill or threaten to kill people and animals is legal.

There is a big race here in Virginia now. It seems like there are 6 people running for 3 offices and they are bombarding us with ads. The republican message is clear. They are against gay marriage, against taxes (schools will die on the vine) and they are for tougher penalties for child sex offenders and for the death penalty. The democrats message is not as clear and unified. It is interesting to note that in Virginia which has a diverse population, all of the candidates are old white Christian men. Thirty percent of Virginians now live in Northern Virginia which borders on Maryland and Washington, DC. That is the fastest growing population in Virginia and I predict there will be a power shift to the democrats at some time in the future. With the country as tightly divided this could be significant. Democrats should strive harder to gain statehood for Washington, DC. Their slogan is "Taxation Without Representation", which as you recall was the battle cry of the American war of independence against Great Britain.

James:

I gotta agree with ya'. This seems like a golden opportunity for the Democrats; my problem is, I have every confidence in them to blow the chance. I don't see any credible opposition, and as TE said, and I think rightly, "We are all doomed either way."

Yeah the republicans are corrupt and the tax breaks for the rich is a horrible thing to do to the country. I'm upset about the Iraq war. You haven't mentioned that as far as I know.

This notion that if we regain control of the government from the republicans everything will suddenly be allright is just not jiving with me. There are too many things they agree on. For instance the democrats voted for the war in Iraq (albeit under false pretences) and the democrats mostly want to stay in Iraq. I hear a lot of griping about Bush but what I don't hear is a fresh plan to improve the country from the democrats. In any event there will be enough republicans around to stick thorns in the democrats should they try to make any drastic changes. We are all doomed either way.
