Sounds Like…

In this episode:

I talk about these songs sounding like artists of yesteryear we all know and love. And I challenge you to agree with me. I also talk about all the links that are after the songs. I offer up a chance at a T-shirt from either the Gym Class Heroes or The Movement (depending on which show I see) to everyone who offers an opinion about who these artists are reminiscent of.

The songs :

Check out the new album by Rising Sun and buy it.

Go out and get you a cd by The Movement or by The Gym Class Heroes. The Movement will be playing Headliners Mainstage in Columbia, SC on 11/04. The Gym Class Heroes will be there the very next night (11/05)!

Go get yourself a T-shirt from Caribbean Free Radio. You will be happy you did.

Man, sorry about them Braves. Huddy has to show up today, eh?

Really cool podcast. I liked the music challenge. Here is my stab.

Geez, I really like those Greent Street guys. All these bands sound good on that Indie label. I had a little hard time with Cavern by Shipwreck….to me the vocal styling is reminiscent of David Byrne and Talking Heads. However, the song itself and instrumentals didn’t so much. Curious to see what you think on that one. The next one, by the BlackTop Burners was hardest for me. I suspect that it is reminiscent of some rocker band that was going when I was a little more into the whold Punk and then Grunge scene. But what the Hell, I always really, really, really dug Thin Lizzy, so I’ll say Think Lizzy for the Hell of it and as a tribute, even if it is way off the mark!!

The next two, were a little easier for me. Almost Thanksgiving Day and Graham Parker was an absolute dead ringer for John Hiatt. I would have bet anything that that was John Hiatt, if I didn’t know it was Parker. And Maseratti/Hong Kong sounded an awful lot like a retro Bangles or Go-Go’s. Because they were a little more rock/hard-core….I’ll go with Bangles.

I got an awesome CD box-set last week. Zombie Heaven. A complete retrospective of the 60’s Zombies. Man, they were f’in great!! I can’t believe that I still haven’t listened to my Gym Class Heroe’s CD yet, that I bought, like, over a month ago. First thing tomorrow in the office (I can listen to music there) it goes on the player.

Later, (I like this challenge stuff a lot. Really neat way to kind of brind some interactivity into this whole thing. Very cool, dude).

Cool answers. My list only agreed with one of your 4, but I can see your points. I’m not going to say yet what I came up with just to see who else might want to weigh in.

    Thanks though and great answers

  3. Don Traeger Says:

Hmmm….only one of four? Damn, pretty tough. I’ll listen to them again and see if I can come up with anything different. Man, 18 innings….jeez….what a tough way to go out. Those Braves and the first round…..man. Sorry about that. Francouer really seemed to have cooled his jets the last month or so, didn’t he?

    dt

One thing I do know for certain is that there was no Butthole Surfer influence in any of those 4 tunes!!!…..

  4. Dave Says:

I’m typing this without looking at Don’s answers. I’ll look after I submit.

    1. – I have no real guess on Shipwreck. Superchunk?

    2. Blacktop Rockets == early KISS

    3. Graham Parker is tricky, since he’s an established artist in his own right. This song sounds like Springsteen to me.

    4. The Hong Kong is the easiest one for me – Blondie.

  5. Dave Says:

Thin Lizzy is a much better answer than KISS for the Blacktop Rockets. Damn.

  6. Don Traeger Says:

Hmmm….I listened to these a bunch more times. I give up.

    1. Shipwreck. I almost started thinking Nirvana at the beginning. I still think the vocals are David Byrne-like. I can’t peg it, though.

    2. Blacktop Rockets. I give up. I don’t really think the right answer is Thin Lizzy. (As much as I like them). I don’t know…it is some derivative rock and roll band, that I’m sure I’ll go: “Oh Yeah, it does sound like them.”

    3. Graham Parker. Still sounds a lot like John Hiatt to me. But, maybe John Hiatt sounds like Graham Parker!?! Springsteen is a great answer, too. But, again….is it Graham Parker sounding like Springsteen….or Springsteen sounding like Graham Parker!?! Well, since Springsteen is better known, he probably is the right answer…..and a good one at that…..but I can play you a lot of John Hiatt that is right in the same ballpark, for sure.

    4. Hong Kong. Of course, Blondie. Damn. That has gotta be it. Great answer. I’ll go down the tubes sticking with my Bangles answer, (it does sound a little like them, too)…..but I think Blondie is the much better choice….and probably the source for a lot of derivative music with female lead vocals.

Makes me think about how derivative music really is. You can hear traces of lots of stuff in lots of stuff, ya know?

  7. Don Traeger Says:

Oh yeah. One more thing. That Gym Class Heroes CD, “Papercut Chronicles” IS a good one. Got kind of a jazzy feel to the instrumentals. Excellent. Ok, and who are they a derivative of? Who do they sound like? Roots, maybe….something like that?

  8. Kevin Says:

    You will probably laugh at these since I am totaly guessing on them, and don’t have a lot of exposure to more obscure bands, but I also realize this contest is just a clever trick to get to know your listeners musical background so this might give an insight into mine. Here goes, in order of how you played them;

    Spirit

    The Who

    John Lennon

    B52s

  9. James Says:

Those are interesting. Not what I picked but very interesting. I would like to point out that there is no right and wrong, just what you think. It’s like the world of podcasting, the only thing that matters is what you think.
